"Author Delves Into Child Abuse Issue" -
An Interview with Mirika Cornelius by

Secrets do hurt...The secret is breath taking

Reader Reviewer unknown    (on SUMMIZE.COM)

I truly enjoyed this novel. It is about a girl growing up
trying to find out where she belongs in this life after
being lied to all of her life. Secret goes through so
much abuse until she finds what she has been looking
for her whole life - her mother. The juiciest part is how
Secret came about and the twist this novel has
shocked me that I stayed up all night to finish it. I put
this novel up there with all my favorites, and have
become a true fan of this author. What I like most
about the book is the realness of the characters and
my favorite characters are Secret and Lucille. This
book was very entertaining and I would recommend it
as a definite read. Don't fall over when the secret
comes out!

Something Fresh And Different!
Reader Reviewer unknown    (on SUMMIZE.COM)

Before I picked up this book I almost gave up on
African American novels. I was beginning to think that
the only thing publishers thought a black mind was
interested in was sex! Then I read this book and it truly
picked me up. I don't won't to give the book away... it
was truly powerful and unique. I loved the main
character, Secret, and once all the truth was revealed
I was totally knocked off of my feet. Great Novel!!!
I understand there will be a sequel and I can't wait for
it!
The author cleverly speaks to the
"taboo" issues of child abuse and
incest through the eyes of an
innocent child who is clueless to
the hatred surrounding her birth.
The author gives great presence to
the main character and a strong
spiritual foundation...

In a small Southern town, a little African-American
child grows up without knowledge of her parentage,
neither her father nor her mother. Raised by her
great-great-aunt May, her grandmother's sister, Secret
is loved and cared for. But the deep and ever-present
void in her life continually impels her to learn more
about her past. From a young age she has felt set off
from others in the community, as if they knew her
truths that she never has known.

Every thread of knowledge on which she tries to pull to
lead to a greater truth seems to tangle, or snap back
in her face. Every door that partially opens slams shut.
But Secret is stronger than that, and she won't give up,
no matter how many folks there her to leave well
enough alone. She persists in discovering the idenity
of her mother, and finding out why her mother isn't
raising her. Secret is irrepressible, and the drive to
know her mother forces her on until she uncovers the
last few rocks and turns over the truth about her life,
and her mother's.

Secret is a compelling story which will linger in any
reader's mind long, long, after fiinally closing the book,
and many readers will be moved to take it up later and
read it again. The plot twists and turns like a winding
river: sometimes Secret's progress seems as slow
as molasses dripping, and at other times events
unfold as fast as white-water rapids. By the end of the
book te reader has been presented a number of
characters in great depth, and comes away with a true
emotional understanding of each of them. Author
Mirika Mayo Cornelius has a wonderful imaginative
capacity, and a gift for plot, character, and descriptive
setting, which is finely demonstrated in both Secret
and its prequel, Colored Lily.

Jocelyn, commonly called Jocie by her family, grows up
in a small household consisting of Momma, Poppa,
brother Junior, and herself. Her best friend is Cousin
Lily, whose mother is dying of stomach cancer, and her
confidant is her grandfather, whose grave she visits as
often as possible to tell him everything about her life.
Only there does she feel she wins the respect and love
a girl child ought to receive from her father.

Certainly Jocie doesn't find that at home, for her
biological Poppa is next thing to a monster. Strictly
speaking, he wasn't her first encounter, but he
orchestrated it, and from that time of age six Jocie's life
became a living hell on earth. She never trusted him
again nor could she find any male trustworthy other than
her deceased grandpoppa, whom she never knew, and
her sly and thieving but still lovable brother Junior.

Colored Lily is a difficult and painful book to read. The
reader will find herself determined to reach through the
pages of the book and give the villains what-for and what
they deserve; the story is that realistic and lifelike and
vivid. Like Secret, of which Colored Lilyis the prequel, no
reader can come away from this book without being
touched as deeply as possible. For those who have
lived through ugly childhoods, memories will be
awakened; for those who have been blessed not to live
those situations, heartstrings will be tugged. But
readers everywhere will find themselves praying for
children who do undergo such sufferings and torment.
Mirika Mayo Cornelius is truly a gifted author who proves
her talent again and again. This reviewer can't wait to
read her next offering.
